Merry Christmas everyone! Woohoo Japan was quite fun. Finally slept enough to blog about it now.
Hmmm so we landed at Fukuoka airport on the 14th. Wa the fugu fish we had that night was damn good. My first time eating the poisonous blowfish. You need to have some license to prepare the fugu properly so we never had the chance to eat it in Singapore. Pity we never watched the fugu chef at work. I was happy enough just trying the fugu fish that night, and I didn't know that we would be having lots more fugu throughout the trip.
Took a bus to Yufuin, after stopping at Beppu. They had this street where the shops were all selling stuff under one theme, and the dog shop was so cool. Didn't find Rufus in any form though. Walked through the street in the snow, and the people from the inn picked us up from the train station. Wa the inn was excellent. We had our first proper Japanese dinner where they serve course by course. Can't remember all the dishes, but everything was delicious. And the onsen (hot spring)! You just soak inside, with your body in the hot water and your head in the cold, and it felt so relaxing. I could only think of how lucky I was inside the onsen.
The next day we took another bus to Nagasaki, and we found a Docomo handphone at the bus terminal. Trying to sell it now. ;) Went to the peace park and the atomic bomb museum. It's shocking looking at what the atomic bomb did to Nagasaki and the people, seeing the horrors of war, and wondering why the US had to drop the bomb on Nagasaki. But then we've also been to the museum in China where you see all the nonsense the Japanese did during the 南京大屠杀, and you just dunno what to think.
Yabuku was scary. We arrived at some ulu ferry terminal when the bus driver was supposed to drop us at the bus terminal, and the sky was dark and it's damn scary thinking that you're gonna be stuck there for the night. Thank goodness we managed to find someone in the ferry terminal who helped us find an inn. In the end it was okay la, just that Yabuku wasn't that wonderful. Only went to the fish market where they sold lots and lots of sotong. Lunch was weird, but I enjoyed it. They served us LIVE sotong where the legs were still wriggling, and you're just supposed to throw it into the sauce and eat it live. Haha. Damn fun. And when we left the boss of the inn just gave us this purse from their shop. Somehow it's just the small things like this people do that make you feel so good.
Went back to Fukuoka after that. There's this HUGE shopping mall called Canal City, and it's actually 3 connected shopping malls. I made a pair of spectacles there, upon noticing that my entire lens was scratched. But the prices there are reasonable and I think the frames are much better as compared to Singapore's.
Now for the 'second half' of the journey. Btw, this was on the 19th. First met up with my dad's friends at the airport, then we went to Hagi. Hmm the other group of bankers turned out to be quite fun. Met up with them for 2 days in Hagi, but I only saw their fun part after they had loads of sake. ;) Seems like once the sake appears on the table, everyone goes crazy liao. Haha. Dinner that night was quite good la. It had to be, seeing that we were having dinner at the bankers' inn and they were paying 26,000 yen per person per night. That night, beside be was this ACS guy who's working now, and opposite me was Ari whose going to HCI. How fun. Really had fun talking to them, quite surprising cos we never really talked a lot whenever I met them.
I lost count of how many potteries we went to in Hagi. The pottery there was very good, but I didn't really know how to appreciate the pottery, so I just stood and watched while my dad and his friends were buying. These potters we visited are supposedly the master potters of Hagi, and they all have their own style and character. Very interesting, especially the last potter we met, where we actually went to his house. He's like an all-rounded artist, designing his house and all that stuff. Had lots more fugu in Hagi. Fugu sashimi, fried fugu, fugu in steamboat, and it's all in one dinner. o.O
Went back to Fukuoka again. And we snowboarded! There was this indoor snowboarding facility and we just went there to try it out. Hee I managed to go down the higher slope without falling down. :D It was damn fun.
Went to Shimoseki the next day. Whoa we met up with this councillor of the entire prefecture, who's some young and rising politician. He actually entertained us in his house, and his property is DAMN BIG. Half of the hill is his, and I dunno what he does with the apartments we saw on the way up the hill to his house. He has this huge garden ending in a bamboo forest of sorts, separating his property from his neighbour's. Lol and his daughter was damn cute. I think she's 4 years old, and she can only speak Japanese. But she still made friends with Maya, who's 9, and it's damn funny watching her play.
Lalala and we're back in Fukuoka again. Went to Space World, this theme park in Kitakyushu. Had a lot of fun that day, then we went back to Hakata (where our hotel is located) and counted down to Christmas while having Yakitori. Ari and Maya are damn fun, I just sat there laughing at what they were doing throughout dinner.
Hmm back in Singapore liao. Japan was fun la. And now it's December 26th. One year after the tsunami. This year passed damn quickly la, it didn't feel like one year at all. I hope next year drags on and on and on and on..
